Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. Distortions in perception may affect all five senses, including sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, but most commonly manifest as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social or occupational dysfunction. A minimum requirement is one of the following symptoms: thought echo, insertion, withdrawal, broadcasting, passivity phenomena, delusional perception, third person hallucinations, and persistent delusions – all in clear consciousness.
Birth Injury a factor?
Complications during pregnancy and birth, such as birth hypoxia – the shortage of oxygen in the body – are associated with an increased risk for schizophrenia. However, it is not clear why hypoxia increases the risk for schizophrenia. Research shows that the presence of a specific indicator of fetal distress following hypoxia was more likely to be present among people who later develop schizophrenia. Their findings suggest that the inability of a high-risk fetus to respond adequately to metabolic stresses that it faces in the womb may contribute to its later risk for developing schizophrenia. Birth injury or Birth defects

Generally, most of the child deliveries go smoothly with little problems. Even if there is a problem, in most of the cases, it can be rectified. Birth Defect and Birth Injuries are two different cases in which complications can arise during both pregnancy and delivery and these problems may result in temporary or permanent injury to the baby.
It is difficult to diagnose in the initial stages if the complication is due to Birth Injury or due to Birth Defect.
Birth Injury:
If a complication arises during the delivery process of the child, it can be termed as Birth Injury. In most of the cases, Birth Injuries happen because of the use of improper technique by a doctor/physician overseeing the process or due to use of improper devices.
The most common forms of Birth Injury may result in the harm to baby because of lack of oxygen to severe head injuries. Though, in most of the cases, fault lies with the doctor overseeing, there are some cases that, despite doctor’s use of reasonable and competent skills, may result in unavoidable birth injuries.
Birth Defects:
Birth defects refer to the complications caused to a baby that arose prior to birth, usually caused by something that happened during or before the mother’s pregnancy.
Many factors may lead to a birth defect in a child. In most of the cases hereditary problems or mother’s use of drugs which effect the baby, result in Birth Defects. The drugs which a mother uses during her pregnancy may harm her child and these kinds of drugs are called teratogens. A number of drugs have been found to be teratogens, and many of these were initially meant to aid a woman’s pregnancy.
So, it is vital for a mother to consult a well qualified doctor to avoid any such cases of Birth Defects.
